VEDIC MATHEMATICS NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 35 A warm welcome to new subscribers. Vedic Mathematics is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people are introduced to the beautifully unified and easy Vedic methods. The purpose of this Newsletter is to provide information about developments in education and research and books, articles, courses, talks etc., and also to bring together those working with Vedic Mathematics. If you are working with Vedic Mathematics - teaching it or doing research - please contact us and let us include you and some description of your work in the Newsletter. Perhaps you would like to submit an article for inclusion in a later issue or tell us about a course or talk you will be giving or have given. If you are learning Vedic Maths, let us know how you are getting on and what you think of this system. ***************************** This issue’s article is a reply to the letter sent on June 30, 2003 by Dr L M Singhvi, President of the World Academy of Vedic Mathematics, which was featured in the last newsletter. This is a very positive and encouraging response and is written by Professor R.D. Shukla, Head of Department of Education and Mathematics within NCERT (the National Council for Education, Research and Training, in India). LETTER FROM NCERT I received the letter of Dr L. M. Singhvi addressed to our Director, Prof. J. S. Raiput sometimes back in connection with Vedic Mathematics. I am really grateful to Dr Singhvi for his academic support and encouragement to NCERT and its faculty. The comprehensive letter addressed to Director gave a lot of information to us regarding Vedic Mathematics and its various dimensions. Dr Singhvi also gave the references of the work going on at international level in the field of Vedic Mathematics. In his letter, he mentioned that we should contact you in this connection, and, therefore, I am writing this letter to you only. As you might be aware, NCERT undertook renewal of school curriculum from classes I to XII and completed the textbooks in three phases. Renewal of mathematics textbooks of different stages is also complete by now. Vedic Mathematics as such, is not an integral part of school curriculum/textbooks and schools as such are not using Vedic Mathematics as part of their curriculum. However, we are interested that Vedic Mathematics should be used as a computational tool in view of its powerful methods of calculation. This was the reason why we were interested that mathematics should be included in the National Curriculum for School Education. At the same time, we want that Vedic Mathematics should be optional and gradually introduced in school system not as a matter of prescription but as a necessity. NCERT being an advisory body for MHRD and State Government in matter of school education cannot force the states or any school/institution in the country to adopt any course related to mathematics. No doubt, an effort is going on to popularise Vedic Mathematics by developing supplementary reading materials under our series, “Reading to Learn” at school level. The Veda Bharati, Hyderabad is developing a supplementary book on Vedic Mathematics which is expected to be a popular Vedic Mathematics book and can be used by schools. We shall be constantly in touch with you and extend all academic support in this your academic endeavour particularly relevant to Vedic Mathematics. **************************** FORTHCOMING EVENTS **************************** WORKSHOP IN KOLKATA The
